HearingLife’s People Who Care series is meant to introduce you to just a few of our many Team Members who serve you with professional, personalized care at our nationwide locations. Today’s feature is about one of our Patient Care Coordinators, who are the friendly faces that greet you when you visit our offices!
Shawna Wilkerson is a patient care coordinator who works at our Richmond, Virginia – Forest Hill location. She has been with HearingLife for 5 years and has worked in hearing care for over 10 years in total.
Shawna has found great personal satisfaction in learning how best to help customers with hearing loss – from changing the way she communicates to seeing how their lives transform when they purchase hearing aids.
“It just feels so good to know that people trust us enough to let us help them,” says Shawna. “It gives me satisfaction to know that we can help them.”
Shawna says that when she first started working in hearing care, customers helped her learn how best to communicate.
“I’ve always been pretty loud,” Shawna says, laughing. “But I had people who told me to speak up and make sure I’m looking at them when I talk to them. Pronouncing words more clearly is so important too – I’ve really learned to have patience and articulate and to make sure folks are wearing their hearing aids before I try talking to them too!”
Shawna has also found mentoring new team members fulfilling and loves to see them grow.
“I do a lot of onboarding for other patient care coordinators,” she explained. “I had one come to me and tell me that she wants to train to be a provider now and that it was because of my training and helping her be more confident! It makes me so happy.”
When Shawna isn’t helping HearingLife customers and team members, she loves spending time with her friends and family. She has a garden, and her son is her pride and joy.
