What does artificial intelligence in hearing aids do?

Hearing aids have had computer chips with advanced sound processing capabilities for many years, allowing for greater sound clarity and speech recognition. Hearing aids have also had multiple programs – allowing the user to switch settings for different environments, such as loud restaurants.

Today, some computer chips in hearing aids can automatically adapt to your surroundings in real time using artificial intelligence. When you enter a crowded space, instead of needing to change programs, AI hearing aids can automatically adjust for your surroundings. Similarly, some hearing aids have an AI mode, which you can turn on and off for this same functionality.

The Deep Neural Network (DNN)

In some hearing aids, artificial intelligence is the Deep Neural Network (DNN) 2.0. The DNN is designed to function like the human brain so that you hear as naturally as possible with your hearing aids. DNN 2.0 was trained using millions of real-world sounds so that artificial intelligence is equipped to handle complex environments and help the user hear clearly. This machine-learning advancement was first introduced by Oticon with the Oticon More™ hearing aid.

DNN 2.0, which is available and always on in Oticon Intent™ and Oticon Zeal™, is what powers wind and sudden noise stabilizing in these devices, minimizing distracting sounds that hearing aid users have struggled with in the past.

Which hearing aids have AI?

There are several ways that hearing aid manufacturers are utilizing AI in hearing aids in 2026, including DNN. Some allow the user to turn AI mode on and off and others utilize deep neural networks full time. Most of the major prescription hearing aid manufacturers are including AI features in their high-end hearing aids, including Oticon Intent™ and Oticon Zeal™.
