Over the years we have received many letters from people with hearing loss, who had been treated by consultants at HearingLife. Their stories make great reading and may provide the encouragement for people those who live with hearing loss, yet have not yet made the step to address it.
As you will read from a sample of these letters, some things that very strongly comes out are:
· Hearing Loss is not just an elderly condition
· As hearing loss is a gradual process, often people will not address the problem for many years, and often fail to recognize the signs.
· Clients with reasonable expectations are also those who are patient and reap the greatest reward with treatments.
· There is help!
“A weight lifted – life changes with hearing aids”
“Is my hearing bad enough to warrant hearing aids?” I asked Katrina, Hearing Life audiologist. She replied, “Jan, anyone has to be ready for aids. Try them and see what a difference they make in your life. Then you’ll make your decision.”
Well, here I am just over 12 months later. I wear my aids almost every waking hour, and if I forget someone reminds me. What has changed? Me! … Wearing aids brought about so many changes at work, with family and in social situations, that I wanted a new physical shape to match the new, confident me.
Scott Miller improves his hearing and, with a newfound confidence, takes on the world.
In my work as a forensic scientist, I regularly attend meetings that have important outcomes that I need to understand. Before being fitted with the new hearing aids, this was difficult, and required all my time and effort to focus on listening. Sometimes my attention wandered off because I couldn’t understand what was being said.
Now I am able to share ideas and collaborate with others more effectively. Another benefit to the new aids is that, in loud social situations, I am able to change setting to what I call 'party mode'. This cuts down on the background noise, enabling me to hear conversations and speeches more clearly.
"I feel so much more confident & relaxed, it’s unbelievable"
Being unable to hear what people were saying was affecting my working life; who wants a receptionist that cannot hear! I felt embarrassed and lacked confidence

A few months before I actually went to Hearing Life, my boss took me aside one day and asked what we were going to do about my hearing. She didn’t realize the impact that statement would have on me, and I left in tears. I’m 47, and I didn’t know what to do. The thought of those huge ugly hearing aids was horrifying to me. If I were a granny maybe it would be different; I could accept them as part of being elderly....
I saw an advertisement in the paper for hearing aids that fitted in the ear canal and I thought I would make enquiries, as I definitely had nothing to lose by going and having a chat.
I got an appointment at HEARINGLife within a week. After a hearing test, with which I was very familiar, it was revealed I had even more of a hearing loss than 4 years ago. This explained why I couldn’t hear the patients at work. A mold was made of my ear canal, and my hearing aids were available within a couple of weeks.
The appointment to pick them up was unbelievable. We did another test, using a computer to pick up sound waves with and without the aids; the difference was huge. It felt like the doctor was talking so loud. When I left the office it felt as though I had one the lottery!
