What are the different types of hearing loss?
There are two primary types of hearing loss: conductive and sensorineural. Conductive hearing loss takes place by interference with sound or transmission through the middle or outer ear; sensorineural hearing loss, or nerve loss, is caused by disorders of the inner ear or auditory nerve itself. Occasionally, a patient may suffer from both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss – this is called a mixed hearing loss. There is also a much less common type of hearing loss called a central hearing loss. With a Central type of hearing loss the brain is not able to process the information delivered to it by the ear.
